Pool Hand Bridge

The Pool Hand Bridge is a new pool mechanical bridge developed for people that have difficulty making a bridge hand due to physical limitations such as arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tremors, missing or stubbed fingers. However, it is also an excellent tool for beginners, especially kids.

This Is My Story!

On February 6, 2022, I woke up with Radial Nerve Palsy, also known as “wrist drop”, causing my left wrist to have zero mobility.  I’ve been playing in pool league for the past 2 years, and it’s been a great hobby and social activity for me.  This condition prevents me from shooting pool using my left hand to make a proper bridge. With a prognosis of 9-12 months recovery, I figured I would not be able to continue playing pool for the current session that had just begun and the rest of the sessions for the rest of the year. And, as captain of my APA team, that was a tough pill to swallow.

However, my friend, Jose, was determined to keep me playing.  He introduced me to the Sure Shot bridge. but it didn’t work for me because I can not extend my fingers.  Jose then challenged me to keep playing using a traditional bridge.  I thought, “that’s a good idea, I can get really good using the tool most players tend to avoid, even though it’s not ideal”.  But then he came up with a cool idea, and 3D printed me a hand bridge.  So, version 1.0 was born (shown on the left)

So we’ve been collaborating on its design since.  After 3 weeks of development, we got to a very functional design, just in time for an APA 8/9 Ball Scotch doubles tournament competing to qualify for the APA National Championships in May at Las Vegas.  Well, it paid off!  We won the 9-ball Scotch Doubles tournament and competed in the APA National Championship in May 2022!

We have received great encouragement and feedback from the leagues I play in (APA and BCA/ACS), and almost everyone was saying “you should patent that!”.  Indeed, we have a Patent Pending status.  And APA National has sanctioned the Pool Hand Bridge for use by anyone.
